Course Description

This course is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills to successfully use Access to create database applications for classroom management and create technology-enriched curriculum.

Goals and Objectives
  1. Students will gain an understanding of the purpose and use of database applications.
  2. Students will develop proficiency creating and working with Access databases.
  3. Students will demonstrate proficiency in developing instructional materials using Access.
  4. Students will increase their Internet and World Wide Web skills.

Time Requirements

This online course consists of six modules taught over a six week period.


Skills, Hardware, and Software Requirements

Students are expected to have a very basic knowledge of how to use an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or America Online (AOL). Students must be familiar with e-mail and have an active e-mail account and Internet access. In addition, students must possess basic word processing skills.

Students are expected to have access to a computer with Windows 95 or higher. Students are expected to have access to Microsoft Access 97 or 2000 (as a stand alone package or as part of the Microsoft Office suite). Students may use either Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, or the latest version of AOL as their browser.

Course Readings

The required textbook for this course is Microsoft Access 97 Complete Concepts and Techniques by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, and Philip J. Pratt or Microsoft Access 2000 Complete Concepts and Techniques. The textbook and course materials will be provided for all students. In addition, online readings and Web site reviews will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Course Outline

Module 1: Creating a Database Using Design and Database Views

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency creating, editing, saving, and printing a database.

Content:

  1. Introduction to Access
  2. Creating a Database Using Design and Database Views
  3. Web Resources and Classroom Application

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete Project 1 in the textbook. Students will also write a brief reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article, or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 2:  Querying a Database Using the Select Query Window

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency retrieving records and creating query reports based on specific data criteria.

  2. Curriculum Integration Ideas
  3. Effective Integration Strategies
  4. Web Resources

Culminating Assignments: Students will complete Project 2 in the textbook. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article, or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 3: Maintaining a Database Using the Design and Update Features of Access

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency updating table records, modifying the database structure, and sorting records.

Culminating Assignments: Students will complete Project 3 in the textbook. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article, or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 4: Creating a Student Database

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency designing and creating a new database and table.

Content:

  1. Identify required fields
  2. Identify field structure
  3. Create a new database
  4. Create a table
  5. Enter data
  6. Create a query
  7. Order records

Culminating Assignment: Students will create a student database and table. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article, or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 5: Publishing to the Internet Using Data Access Pages

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency creating and using a Data Access page.

Content:

  1. Define Data Access page
  2. Create a Data Access page
  3. Preview a Data Access page
  4. Use a Data Access page

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete the Web Feature in the textbook. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article, or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 6: Final Integration Project

Objectives:  Students will demonstrate the ability to create a technology-enriched lesson that uses an Access database.

Culminating Assignment: Based upon what students have learned in this course, they will create an Access database to accompany a lesson in a subject specific curriculum area.
