Teaching Millennials Online

Course Description

This course is designed to assist educators in identifying and meeting the needs of Millennial students. A study of generational attributes will assist the learner in identifying each archetype in their educational setting. Students will participate in several assignments that reinforce the concepts and strategies found within the course modules and must see websites. Learners will create a lesson plan for Millennial students in a subject area of their choice.

• Analyze the unique characteristics of Millennials
• Assess several technologies of the millennial
• Determine technology-based strategies to engage Millennials
• Develop a lesson plan for working with Millennials

Curriculum Design & Time Requirements

Teaching Millennials is a three module, one credit graduate level course that runs over four weeks online.

Hardware & Computer Skills Requirements

Students may use either a Macintosh computer or a PC with Windows 2000 or higher. Students should possess basic word processing skills and have internet access with an active e-mail account. Students also are expected to have a basic knowledge of how to use a Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla Firefox etc.

Course Materials

Online readings and Web site reviews (including journal articles and best practices from the body of educational research) will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Session 1: What is a Millennial?
Objectives:

1. Classify basic characteristics of the four most recent generations
2. Examine basic characteristics of each archetype
3. Identify personal generation

Session 2: Characteristics of Millennials
Objectives:

1. Analyze the unique characteristics of Millennials

• The personality of Millennials

Session 3: Millennials and Technology
Objectives:

1. Assess several technologies of the millennial
2. Determine technology-based strategies to engage Millennials
3. Develop a lesson plan for working with Millennials

• Technology in the classroom for Millennials
