Course Description
This course is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills to successfully use Microsoft Office 97 and to effectively integrate this software suite into the classroom curriculum to enhance student learning. Teachers will increase their ability to use and integrate the word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation tools of Microsoft Office 97. This online course presents practical, hands-on training, ideas, Web resources, and classroom projects.


This online course consists of six modules taught over a six week period.
Skills, Hardware, and Software Requirements
Students are expected to have a very basic knowledge of how to use an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or America Online (AOL). Students must be familiar with e-mail and have an active e-mail account and Internet access. In addition, students must possess basic word processing skills.
Students are expected to have access to the software suite Microsoft Office 97.

Course Readings
The required textbook for this course is Microsoft Office 97 by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, and Misty Vermaat. The textbook and course materials will be provided for all students. In addition, online readings will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Course Outline
Module 1: Word Processing
Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency using basic skills to create a formatted document with clip art.
Content:

Module 2: Integrating Microsoft Word 97
Objectives: Students will apply their knowledge using basic skills to create an integration-related project.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article or best practice focusing on effective word processing integration ideas and strategies. Students will also create a formatted document with clip art that supports their curriculum utilizing the skills learned in Module One.

Module 3: Building a Spreadsheet
Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency building a spreadsheet and will identify classroom integration techniques and ideas.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will build a spreadsheet. Students will also submit a 100 - 200 word reflection on the assigned reading, Web sites, and the module addressing how the Microsoft Excel can be integrated into a technology-enriched curriculum.

Module 4: Creating a Database
Objectives: Students will use Access to create a database and identify classroom integration ideas.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will create a database. Students will also submit a 100 - 200 word reflection on the assigned reading, Web sites, and the module addressing how the Microsoft Access can be integrated into a technology-enriched curriculum.

Module 5: Microsoft PowerPoint
Objectives: Students will create a PowerPoint presentation that will support their classroom curriculum.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will create a PowerPoint presentation that supports their classroom curriculum.

Module 6: Integrating PowerPoint into the Curriculum
Objectives: Students will expand and integrate skills from odule Five.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will select one integration idea that supports their specific classroom curriculum and create a lesson plan that integrates one of the software applications (Word, Excel, Access, or PowerPoint) of Microsoft Office 97. Students will also complete the course evaluation.
