Course Description

This course is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills to successfully use PowerPoint 2000 to create professional electronic lecture presentations, overhead transparencies, speaker notes, outline pages, student handouts, web-based presentations and create technology-enriched curriculium.

Goals and Objectives
  1. Students will gain an understanding of the purpose and use of computer generated presentations.
  2. Students will develop proficiency creating disk-based and Web-based presentations.
  3. Students will demonstrate proficiency in developing instructional materials using PowerPoint 2000.
  4. Students will increase their Internet and World Wide Web skills.

Time Requirements

This online course consists of six modules taught over a six week period.


Skills, Hardware, and Software Requirements

Students are expected to have a very basic knowledge of how to use an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or America Online (AOL). Students must be familiar with e-mail and have an active e-mail account and Internet access. In addition, students must possess basic word processing skills.

Students are expected to have access to a computer with Windows 95/98 or higher. Students are expected to have access to Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 (as a stand alone package or as part of the Microsoft Office 2000 suite). Students may use either Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, or the latest version of AOL as their browser.

Course Readings

The required textbook for this course is Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 Complete Concepts and Techniques by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, and Susan L. Sebok (ISBN 0-7895-4679-5). The textbook and course materials will be provided for all students. In addition, online readings and Web site reviews will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Course Outline

Module 1: Using a Design Template and AutoLayouts to Create a Presentation

Objectives:  Students will demonstrate proficiency creating, editing, saving, and printing a presentation using a Design Template and AutoLayouts.

Content:

  1. Introduction to PowerPoint
  2. Design Templates and AutoLayouts
  3. Web Resources and Classroom Applications

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete Project 1 in the textbook. Students will write a one to two paragraph reflection on the supplemental information provided in this module and the assigned Web sites. Students will discuss new ideas and significant insights and how this information can be used to support classroom integration of technology.

Module 2: Using Outline View and Clip Art to Create a Slide Show

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency creating presentations using Outline view, clip art, and animation.

Content:

  1. Using Clip Art or Graphics in PowerPoint
  2. Graphic Formats
  3. Animation
  4. Outlines in Educational Multimedia Projects
  5. Classroom Integration
  6. Web Resources

Culminating Assignments: Students will complete Project 2 in the textbook. Students will write a one to two paragraph reflection on the supplemental information provided in this module and the assigned Web sites. Students will discuss new ideas and significant insights and how this information can be used to support classroom integration of technology.

Module 3: Creating a Presentation on the Web Using PowerPoint

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency converting an existing PowerPoint presentation to a Web presentation and creating a new presentation for the Web.

  3. Multimedia Plug-ins
  4. Classroom Integration

Culminating Assignments: Students will convert an existing presentation to Web pages. Students will write a one to two paragraph reflection on the supplemental information provided in this module and the assigned Web sites. Students will discuss new ideas and significant insights and how this information can be used to support classroom integration of technology.

Module 4: Using Embedded Visuals to Enhance a Slide Show

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency creating organizational charts and PowerPoint clip art objects.

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete Project 3 in the textook. Students will write a one to two paragraph reflection on the supplemental information provided in this module and the assigned Web sites. Students will discuss new ideas and significant insights and how this information can be used to support classroom integration of technology.

Module 5: Creating a Presentation Containing Interactive OLE Documents

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency using WordArt objects, special text effects, interactive documents, action buttons, and hyperlinks.

  2. Multimedia and NonLinear Learning
  3. Web Resources

Culminating Assignment: Students will create a presentation entitled "Spring Break Cruise."  Students will submit a 25 - 50 word reflection on how students in their classroom could use PowerPoint to enhance a classroom project.

Module 6: Final Integration Project

Objectives: Students will demonstrate the ability to create a technology-enriched lesson that uses a PowerPoint presentation.

Culminating Assignment: Based upon what students have learned in this course, they will create a PowerPoint presentation to accompany a lesson in a subject specific curriculum area.
