Course Description
The purpose of Self-Esteem for Teachers Online is for teachers to increase student achievement by applying strategies and integrating principles of self-esteem enhancement into the classroom. Teachers will become familiar with the research on the relationship between self-esteem and achievement and implement strategies for putting research findings into practice. This is Part I of a two-part course.


This online course consists of six modules taught over a six week period. Each module consists of a reading and writing assignment, as well as an application assignment. Participants will post assignments weekly and dialogue with colleagues regarding assignments and experiences. They will also communicate personally each week with the instructor via e-mail. The content of the course will be supplemented with links to resources providing current research. Each module requires approximately five hours to complete.
At the completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion recommending 30 inservice points or professional development credits be awarded by the participant's school district. It is up to participants to get prior approval from their district to take this course for professional development credit.
Skills, Hardware, and Software Requirements
Students are expected to have a very basic knowledge of how to use an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or America Online (AOL). Students must be familiar with e-mail and have an active e-mail account and Internet access. In addition, students must possess basic word processing skills.

Course Readings
The required textbook for this course is Enhancing Self-Esteem by C. Jessie Carlock, Ph.D. The textbook and course materials will be provided for all students. In addition, online readings will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Course Outline
Module 1: Introduction and Overview
Objectives: Students will understand course requirements, goals, and expectations; become familiar with course navigation system; introduce themselves to others in the class; begin to develop an operational definition of self-esteem.

Module 2: A Four-Phase Model for Enhancing Self-Esteem
Objectives: Students will understand an operational definition of self-esteem; learn and apply Maslow's theory of human needs; learn a developmental model for enhancing self-esteem through intervention; learn a definition of "identity" and apply it to self-esteem enhancement.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will reflect on the reading and assigned Web sites. Students will post assignments in the Forum. Students will read and comment on their colleagues' postings.

Module 3: Intention and Self-Esteem
Objectives: Students will distinguish between wants and intentions; learn and apply an operational definition of intention; identify typical barriers to realizing intention; identify conscious and unconscious intentions; create self-esteem intentions.

Culminating Assignment: Students will read Chapter 2, "Developing High Self-Esteem," pages 39-86, in the textbook. Students will also post the assignments, "Wants vs. Intentions" and "Writing Intentions" in the Forum. Students will read and comment on their colleagues' postings.

Module 4: Phase 2: Strengths and Weaknesses
Objectives: Students will learn a definition of "identity" and "identity crisis"; understand the role of identity in the development of healthy self-esteem; raise awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses.

Culminating Assignment: Students will read Chapter 4, "Social System and Self-Esteem," pages 145-202, in the textbook and post the assignment, "Self-Assessment" in the Forum. Students will read and comment on their colleagues' postings.

Module 5: Internal Dialogue and Self-Esteem
Objectives: Students will distinguish between cognition and emotion; raise awareness on conscious and unconscious thought; identify and change the effect of negative thought patterns.

Culminating Assignment: Students will read Chapter 5, "Body and Self-Esteem," pages 203-248, in the textbook. Students will post the assignment, "Killer Statements" in the Forum. Students will read and comment on their colleagues' postings.

Module 6: Self-Esteem Strategies for the Classroom
Objectives: Students will collaborate with colleagues to identify self-esteem strategies for the classroom; learn new skills for effectively facilitating self-esteem through class discussions; develop a lesson plan integrating principles of self-esteem.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will read Chapter 6, "Gender and Self-Esteem," pages 251-286, in the textbook and submit the assignment, "Integrating Self-Esteem" to the instructor. Students will complete the course evaluation.

Grading Criteria
This course is offered on a pass/fail basis. Students are expected to complete each assignment by the specified due date. Students are expected to participate in each Forum and dialogue with their colleagues. Students that meet these requirements will pass this course.
