This course is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills to successfully use the Windows 98 operating system in the classroom. The course includes instruction for using menus, windows, dialog boxes, files, folders, and shortcuts. Students will also be introduced to the Windows 98 Accessories and how these applications can be integrated into technology-enriched curriculum.


This online course consists of six modules taught over a six week period.

Students are expected to have a very basic knowledge of how to use an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or America Online (AOL). Students must be familiar with e-mail and have an active e-mail account and Internet access. In addition, students must possess basic word processing skills.
Students are expected to have access to a computer with Windows 98. Students may use either Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, or the latest version of AOL as their browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer is the recommended browser for this course.

The required textbook for this course is Microsoft Windows 98 Introductory Concepts and Techniques by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, and Steve G. Forsythe (ISBN 0-7895-4299-4). The textbook and course materials will be provided for all students. In addition, online readings and Web site reviews will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Module 1: Fundamentals of Using Windows 98
Objectives: Students will describe the Windows 98 specifications, environment and user interface, and identify the objects on the Windows 98 desktop. Students will demonstrate proficiency using basic mouse operations, keyboard shortcuts, and window operations.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will identify and label the objects on the desktop, list three methods of launching a Web browser, and use Help to answer questions.

Module 2: Working with Games, Notepad, Internet Tools, and Communication Accessories
Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency accessing Games, Notepad, Internet tools, and Communication Accessories.
Content:
Culminating Assignments: Students will use the Internet Explorer application to visit Web pages and answer specific questions. Students will submit a brief reflection on how the Accessories applications covered in this module could be integrated into a technology-enriched lesson plan.

Module 3: Working on the Windows 98 Desktop
Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency managing the desktop space and working with desktop features.
Content:
Culminating Assignments: Students will identify the steps required to print, copy, and delete files and folders. Students will identify the steps required to to place, open, and remove a document shortcut. Students will use Help to locate terms and definitions in the Windows Glossary and use the copy feature to create a Notepad document.

Module 4: File, Document, and Folder Management and Windows 98 Explorer
Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency working with desktop views and the Windows 98 Explorer.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will identify and label the contents of the Explorer window. Students will answer specific questions about Windows paths.

Module 5: Working with Paint, System Tools, Calculator, Entertainment, and Accessibility
Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency accessing the Paint, System tools, Calculator, Entertainment, and Accessibility Accessories.
Content:
Culminating Assignment: Students will submit a reflection on the importance of performing regular system maintenance. Students will include in their reflection how the Accessories applications covered in this module could be integrated into a technology-enriched lesson plan.

Module 6: Final Integration Project
Objectives: Students will demonstrate the ability to create a technology-enriched lesson plan that uses Windows 98.
Culminating Assignment: Based upon what students have learned in this course, they will create a lesson plan to demonstrate their knowledge of how to integrate Windows 98 into a subject specific curriculum area.
