Course Description

This course is designed to provide teachers with the necessary skills to successfully use Word 97 to create professional letters, envelopes, reports, research papers, and other class teaching and management documents.  Students will also learn how to use Word as a teaching and learning tool for student use and to create technology-enriched curriculum.

Goals and Objectives
  1. Students will gain an understanding of how Word can be used to develop course materials.
  2. Students will gain an understanding of how Word can be used to communicate with parents and administrators.
  3. Students will develop proficiency creating letters, reports, and other class related Word documents.
  4. Students will demonstrate proficiency in enhancing Word documents with graphics, tables, text and paragraph attributes.
  5. Students will increase their Internet and World Wide Web skills.

Time Requirements

This online course consists of six modules taught over a six week period.


Skills, Hardware, and Software Requirements

Students are expected to have a very basic knowledge of how to use an Internet browser such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or America Online (AOL). Students must be familiar with e-mail and have an active e-mail account and Internet access. In addition, students must possess basic word processing skills.

Students are expected to have access to a PC computer with Windows 95 or higher. Students are expected to have access to Microsoft Word 97 (as a stand alone package or as part of the Microsoft Office 97 suite). Students may use either Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, or the latest version of AOL as their browser.

Course Readings

The required textbook for this course is Microsoft Word 97 Introductory Concepts and Techniques by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, and Misty E. Vermaat (ISBN 0-7895-4684-1). The textbook and course materials will be provided for all students. In addition, online readings and Web site reviews will be assigned during the course to enhance learning. These readings will be presented as annotated Web sites within the course content.

Course Outline

Module 1:  Creating and Editing a Word Document

Objectives:  Students will demonstrate proficiency creating, editing, saving, opening, spell checking, adding clip art and printing a document.

Content:

  1. Introduction to Word 2000
  2. Creating a Document With Clip Art
  3. Classroom Integration Ideas

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete Project 1 in the textbook. Students will also write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article or best practice focusing on effective word processing integration ideas and strategies.

Module 2: Integrating Word Processing Into the Classroom

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency creating a document with clip art.

Content:

  1. Curriculum Integration Ideas
  2. Effective Integration Strategies
  3. Web Resources

Culminating Assignments: Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article or best practice focusing on effective word processing integration ideas and strategies. Students will also create a formatted document with clip art that supports their curriculum utilizing the skills learned in Module One.

Module 3: Creating a Research Paper

Objectives: Students will create a research paper with MLA documentation style and footnotes.

Culminating Assignments: Students will complete Project 3 in the textbook. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 4: Using a Wizard to Create a Resume and Creating a Cover Letter with a Table

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency using the Resume Wizard, working with multiple document windows, creating tables, and creating business letters and envelopes.

  1. Create a Resume Using Word's Resume Wizard
  2. Identify the Components of a Cover Letter
  3. Insert a Word Table in a Document
  4. Prepare and Print an Envelope Address
  5. Classroom Integration

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete Project 2 in the textbook. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 5: Creating Web Pages Using Word

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency creating a Web page using Word.

  1. Create a Word Document
  2. Adding an E-mail Hyperlink
  3. Using Word's Web Page Wizard
  4. Classroom Integration

Culminating Assignment: Students will complete the Web Feature in the textbook. Students will write a reflection on the assigned reading and each assigned Web site, research article or best practice focusing on effective integration ideas and strategies.

Module 6: Final Integration Project

Objectives: Students will demonstrate proficiency using Word to create a Web page that will support a classroom concept or project.

Culminating Assignment: Based upon what students have learned in this course, they will use Word to create a Web page in a subject specific curriculum area that can be used by students or parents. Students will include an e-mail hyperlink and additional Web resources.
