Strategies for Addressing COVID Learning Loss

Educators across the U.S. are grappling with an unprecedented learning loss, often referred to as the "COVID Slide." Students faced academic setbacks during the previous school year due to the impact of COVID-19 and virtual learning, with those who were already struggling before the pandemic experiencing the most significant decline. COVID-19 has disrupted the education of an entire generation of children, leaving them ill-prepared. This alarming learning loss may lead to an increase in high school drop-out rates, potentially resulting in up to 1 million additional drop-outs. To effectively address this pandemic-induced learning loss, it is crucial for schools to assess its extent and implement evidence-based strategies to support students' growth, as emphasized by Dr. Dan Jorgensen of the Colorado Department of Education's School Improvement and Planning.

Graduate participants earn 1 semester hour of graduate credit and will receive a transcript from Madonna University. Professional development participants will receive a certificate of completion for 20 hours of professional developments credit.

Module One: Evaluation of current Learning Loss

Contents:

Pre-testing of both content and procedural mastery.
Creation of pre-test rubrics.

Module Two: Intervention and Support

Contents:

Designing small group intervention and support.
Designing whole class intervention and support.

Module Three: Lesson Planning

Contents:

Determine lesson successes/failures.
Create lesson modifications and student re-groupings, as needed.

Objectives

Assess the extent of Covid Learning loss.
Develop an understanding of how learning loss can impact behavior.
Design small group differentiated instruction.
Graphically chart what mastery is deficient or totally absent.
Review strategies to create a safe, secure and successful classroom.

Important Information

Online 3-graduate credit courses are 13 weeks in length.

On-site weekend courses are held Friday evening from 6:00pm-9:00pm and Saturday/Sunday, 8:30am-5:30pm.

Weekday courses are Monday-Friday from 8:00am- 6:00pm.

It is the responsibility of the student to check with their state, county, district, or school to ensure that all requirements are being met by the course you're taking.

Students are required to purchase their own textbook, the information for which can be found here. If no book is required it will be specified on the list. We have copies of many of the textbooks should you wish to purchase directly from TEI.

Professional development (PD) participants receive a certificate of completion from TEI for 45 hours of PD credit for face to face classes and 60 hours of PD credit for online classes. These certificates are mailed within one week of the end of the class and reflect the course title, dates of attendance, and credit hour information.
